The plaza is named after the famous Battle Of Ramales ,the 1st battle of the Carlist Wars,fought on May 12th 1839 ,the Liberals lead by Baldomero Espartero defeated the Carlists decisively, theres also a monument to celebrated artist Diego Velazquez which looks cool ,theres also some beautiful architecture not just in the plaza but leading down.

La plaza de Ramales fue urbanizada tras los derribos ordenados por José Bonaparte. Anteriormente tenía el nombre de plaza de San Juan por la iglesia y monasterio del mismo nombre. El nombre de Ramales lo toma del pueblo de Cantabria donde se ganó, durante las guerras carlistas, la batalla homónima a las tropas del denominado Carlos VII.
